Anyone ever seen Dr. Tiel in Jackson MS for BPI?
I have an appointment with him on Oct 28 and am second guessing after reading the comments on this message board.

I would highly recommend seeing a BPI specialist. You can find listings on the resources link at the top of the page, then medical and US. Many on here that are adults have been to Mayo, my son included, can't say enough good things about them. We were fortunate in that our dr's told us right away that they did not have the expertise in BPI that is needed.

Pam, I dont know where all you've checked but a lot of people on here suggest Mayo. I'm sure that'd be a great place to go. Being that you are in Nashville, I have been seeing Dr. Meyer at UAB on Birmingham. He's knowledgable on this issue and is fairly geographically close to you if that helps you. I am only 6 months post-op but am seeing small improvement already.

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

Dr Tiel has been a tbpi specialist for longer than any other doctor I know of in the USA but has the reputation of being conservative. He is also extremely ethical and won't recommend costly surgery if the benefits are not likely to be great. The Mayo are the top team as far as more recent experience goes and they are highly rated by people posting here. Their team approach seems to be a huge advantage, tbpi being so very complex and needing such prolonged and difficult surgery. See whoever you can, but experience in tbpi is the most important factor.
