I wanted to say that by this topic being posted, it verified what my fears already were. I know that this wasn't a "scientific study", but isn't it interesting that the answer to the question is invariably "ON MY BACK?!?!"

As a mother of a ROBPI daughter (who delivered on her back after delivering a 1 1/2 lb. larger baby prior), and as a RN who works labor and delivery, I thought the answers provided by each person were very shocking yet informative. I've since given an in-service to my colleagues (Nurses, Midwives, OBGYN's, and Pediatricians) on the topic of BPI with a section speaking about prevention and included that on this particular forum, the numbers for delivering in the lithotomy position were staggering and very convincing! I also included lots of other information such as risk factors, definitions, and possible treatments. You want to know the response I got? It was two-fold:

1) Thank you for informing us of prevention techniques and risk factors

AND

2) The providers were very glad that we ENCOURAGE delivering while squatting, hands-knees position, or lateral rather than in lithotomy at the hospital that I currently work at (not the hospital where I delivered my ROBPI daughter)!

And one last thought here. I think we need to ENCOURAGE one another here rather than try to discredit each other. After all, aren't we all in the business of helping our children and preventing this from happening to future children? I know that's why I come to this forum!

Thanks for listening. And by the way, wish us luck as Amber is going on Tuesday for her first MRI and then a follow-up the next morning with Dr. Kozin in Philadelphia. Hopefully it will all be good news!

Also on my back. I too asked my midwife if I could squat once she said the baby was stuck. She looked at me almost appalled (I had squatted with my first, same size and no-injury but with a different midwife)She said no. Thank you Rich for this post, "scientific" or not, it's very informative.
