Re: my doctor is quitting obstetrics!
I have an idea. Why don't we let the pregnant women know how often dear Dr. Carter has injured perfectly healthy newborn babies...for life. How about trusting that your doctor knows what he's doing, and then he hurts your baby. He gives your baby permanent nerve damage. An injury that makes your 'perfect' baby a "special needs" baby. For life. Complete with deformities. Or shall we call that contracture.
Did I mention that to treat this injury it costs about 2 million dollars in your child's lifetime? Did I mention that your new baby's life consists of PT & OT for the rest of her life? Yes. The rest of her life. Oh, let's not forget the tests, and surgeries that your baby will endure. Yes, these are done when they are tiny little babies. And then some...
Oh, and there's a bonus. When your child is around 12 years old, they get to have pain again. Not the kind of pain that they are already used to, and have learned to live with... extra pain.
And they're shoulder gets to internally rotate again. And we parents? We get to continue to cry ourselves to sleep every night and pray harder and harder that their arm will grow.
In case you are unfamilar with this preventable injury, it is a Brachial Plexus Injury. Commonly known as Erb's Palsy. Look it up.
My doctor told me that those bruises all over her neck, arm and back were nothing to worry about. "just hormones. they'll go away within a year"
He failed to mention the broken clavicle and the paralyzed arm. He not only left his hand print on my baby...his shoe is still in my heart. I trusted him. And unfortunately, I paid him, to paralyze my once perfectly healthy baby girl.
And to Ms. Belcher, pregnant with her second child, this is a blessing. You just cannot appreciate it now...maybe never. But I know I speak for every parent whose child has been injured at the doctors hands....and we are all praying that your new OB will deliver a beautiful healthy baby for you, and that you may rest easy at night knowing your new little one is in good hands....yours.
