Thanks for all your responses! Great points and ideas. And Lisa, thanks for the idea about Montessori. That is a great option I hadn't considered.

You do have to follow your heart and also research the schools. Don't be afraid to ask questions and set your expectations and let them know about the injury and how to care for it.
We did put our 3 year old in a reverse main stream preschool program (meaning there were special needs children along with "model" students). I was a little hesitant at first because of the special needs, but am so glad I did it...she receives speech therapy and occupational therapy but more importantly I feel a little more secure that because she is in the program now that as she progresses through the public school system it will be easier to get the services if she needs them later.
