- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

Re: Brachial Plexus Surgeons
hi this is kevin. i had surguy and i was just wondering how long was it before he regained anything back. i am impatiant. please reply or call 254-379-2885. thank you!!!!!!!!!
Re: Brachial Plexus Surgeons
Hi Kevin,
The length of time in your recovery is directly related to how much distance the nerves need to grow in order to make contact with the muscle. Nerves grow ~1 inch / month so it can take quite awhile. Ask your doctor about the length of growth needed. Also, assuming you've been given therapy, DO IT!!! If you just had surgery it might be too soon for therapy, but at the point you are expected to, please be disciplined about it.
Take care & keep us posted,
Ellen

Re: Brachial Plexus Surgeons
My husband has bp and no one he has seen for this injury has talked surgery. They told him to start physiotherapy, he went once the pain was intolerable. she sent him home with exercise. What's up with that.
Re: Brachial Plexus Surgeons
Has he seen a BPI specialist? I would strongly suggest it. Not all injuries need surgery but I would see someont that specializes in this area just to be sure you are doing all you can.

Kelly had Dr Nath that we found on the internet 6 weeks after the accident in Houston. She just saw him two days ago at a free clinic in Chicago. He wants her to have DREZ with Dr Osenbach at Duke. Also said to take 6 months off school (college) and have more surgeries to get muscles transferred. He was very good and Dr Laurent assisted (he has since passed away).
