Just another echo to Francine's excellent response - make sure the neurologist, PT and opthamologist you see are familiar with BPI. We talked to a bunch of people who were clueless, including a pediatric neurologist who told us that physical therapy would be of no benefit. And it's true that so many people repeat the myth that it will probably go away and you should "wait and see." My cousin had just completed her midwife training at New York University less than a year before my son was born. When I asked her what she knew about shoulder dystocia, she said, "Don't most of those injuries resolve within a year?"

HI Sarah,
I'm mom to Melanie (3.5) and Matthew (almost 2) both rbpi. Melanie recovered by 9 weeks although I'm still watching her for problems. Matthew's injury was much more severe. He has two surgeries to date and has just been recommended for two more procedures. Matthew was in the hospital for the first month of his life because his phrenic nerve was also damaged so he wasn't getting enough oxygen. On my child's team for care we have a neurologist who runs a bpi clinic, a bpi specialist team, pt, ot, acupuncturist, chiropractor who also does reiki energy, reflexologist who is one of the most talented people I have ever met who also does myo-fascial release and energy work. We have just added two more bpi specialist docs to the group that we will be meeting with in March and April. Don't be afraid to get second opinions and don't stop until you get all the answers.

Sarah, My daughter who is now 16 months old had the horner's syndrome. She has RBPI. When she was first born her eye would never open. I was getting concerned about it. Slowly she started to open it. I took her to see a specialist and it is very common with the injury. People tell me now that they can't even notice her eye. Her pupil is smaller than her other one and her right eye closes before her left if she if figting her sleep but other than that her eye is ok.
