Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

here's a site about the hairiness associated with splint wearing http://www.keratin.com/ah/ah006.shtml i got really gorilla like hair after my arm was cast, i shaved it in the end! but as for hairiness in the bpi arm without a splint, i'm sure i've read somewhere that this can happen in association with nerve damage but i can't find it now. the condition is called hypertrichosis if you want to research it. My bpi arm which has no sweating or heat regulatory function at all is not hairy, though......if i find anything else i'll post it :0)

Hi Wendy!!! Yes! Joey's injured arm is also hairy! He often comments on it and is disturbed by it... In fact he seems more troubled by the hair on his arm than the fact that his arm has limitations! I think because to him the hair seems so noticable to everyone... I wonder if it just seems to be hairier than the other arm because the arm is smaller in size.... Same number of hair follicles as the other arm only the arm is less bulky so the hair appears more numerous.... Although that theory may not fly because it also seems longer on that arm too... not sure... You and Rachel should come up for a visit sometime!!! Take care and God bless! love, Joann :o)

Sorry but Katie had NO hair for almost two years PLUS the skin was shiny--so shiny it glowed. I forget the exact name of it but it was from the nerve damage. Now that she is getting more recovery from primary she is getting some hair and the glossiness is almost gone(well it was, it is shining again in the last few weeks plus she is having some new sensations--she has about beaten her arm to death recently, rubbing and smacking it again)

When we have patients with PVD (peripheral vascular disease, diminished blood flow) they have a lack of hair that body area normally so perhaps it has something to do with nerve injury and decreased blood flow at the same time. just a thought..
