Tieing laces
Tieing laces
Hello everybody, i would just like to know if anyone has mastered how to tie laces with one hand? i know you can get these fancy laces that curl up, but i would like to do it myself. I can still tie all my rope climbing knots but not my shoes.
thank you

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.
Re: Tieing laces
here's a link from paulo in portugal showing how he does his, i do mine differently but couldn't explain it, i'd have to show you! nowadays i wear elastic sided boots like just about everyone else in new zealand, much simpler :0) http://www.geocities.com/paulo_go/pics. ... chor479938
Re: Tieing laces
Hi Bigsel. . I wear boots and solve the lace problem by twisting the lce around my fingers and tucking them in my sock. Bots work better for this than shoes as the laces are nearer the your socks! Also I don't tie them all the way up so they are quick to get on and off. I'm sure you will be offered other more ingenious solution.

Hi Sel,
Yeah I've done the shoelace thing. It's not too hard. I do it in a similar way (it looks) to Paulo.
Basically I tie one side of each 'bow' seperately.
Make the first part of the bow by slipping one lace under the other, the put one end under your other shoe to hold it firm. Slide the shoe your tying so the lace becomes taught and pull the other end at the same time.
Then keeping the end under your other shoe tight, make one side of the bow. Just get a basic loop, pass it under the tight lace and pull the loop through and tighten it.....hey presto one loop.
Next is the tricky bit. You have to make the other side of the bow. It will take a bit of practice but once your there its easy. You just have to get a loop in the free end of the lace, pass it aroud the bow you've just tied and pull it through. Your fingers get in all sorts of places (I found) at first, but you'll see what you need to do.
Hope this helps and you understand it!
Good Luck,
Steve P

Re: Tieing laces
At first I was really lazy because I thought my hand would come back. So in the beginning I bought elastic the size of my shoe laces had a friend thread and tie them which in turn made my sneakers slip on shoes. Only six months later winter came and you can't cheat with snow boots and wearing sneakers meant snow in your shoes!!!!!! So I started tying using the method taught in a children's book I bought for my daughter so she could teach herself. The book is called "Red Lace, Yellow Lace" by Mike Casey and it is published by Barron's so if you have small children that need to learn the normal way grab this book it is fantastic! In my modification method I use my other foot if the laces are short like in sneakers or my teeth if they are my boots. My daughter gets really grossed out when she sees me using my teeth but then she is only five so hopefully one of us eventually finds a better method.
Children very quickly can teach you how to laugh and adapt. So if you are ever stuck on how to do something ask a kid they are more than happy to create new ways to do things. My nine year old son has came up with some of the neatest ways for me to do things.
I hope this helped.
God bless
