I first became aware that my arm was different.....
I first became aware that my arm was different.....
I first became aware of a difference in my are while I was in high school - a junior, I think. I was preparing to ride in a horse show and the instructor told me to hold my elbows in, close to my trunk while I rode.
I tried to get that darned elbow to stay close to my side, but it wouldn't do it.
I remember telling the instructor that my elbow wouldn't stay in. And that was that. On with high school.
My left OBPI was an inconvenience, I never thought it was a handicap.
I'm 60, now, and have only learned about the OBPI network two years ago. I thought I was the only person with my problem (it bacame a "problem" only in the last three years when I started having shoulder pain in my OBPI left arm and carpal tunnel in my right), and I am happy to learn and listen to the others on the message board.
I'd like to hear other's stories of how you became aware of your specialness
Thanks for all the wonderful stories so far....
Judi

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

Hi Judi
I found ubpn two weeks after I turned 60 and was shocked. I really thought I was the only one with Erb's Palsy. We have so many adults posting here now that we could form our own little club... LOL...
It is nice to compare notes and realize some of our little quirks are similar. I like reading about all the new people's stories I am so glad you posted.
Welcome to the message boards.

Judi,
Welcome to the boards and yes, I too thought I was the only one in the world with this problem too. Hard to believe that there can be so many people injured from the same thing. Kath's right, we could form our own little club. Just remember your not alone, you have all of us now.
Nice to meet you.

Judi,
Welcome to the board. We need to find one more Judy and we can have a Judy party. We should all go to Atlantic City or vegas and can be the one armed bandit club. I am 43 and found the board a few years ago. If you have any questions ask away. We learn from each other. Judy

It is so strange how we all seemed to feel as if we were the only one, with so many of us around!

You're right Kamren. I'm 65 and first met another OBPI last summer at Camp.
Welcome to the boards Judy. The forums are great places to share your thoughts and seek answers to your questions.
