Shoulder Fusion.

Post by bigsel »

I was just wondering if anyone else has had there shoulder fused? & how long was it until everything got back to normal? I only ask because I had a job to do yesterday & it took me one & a half hours, but I suffered last night for it as I was up all night in agony, I had my op only two weeks ago. Some information would be nice.

I had my right shoulder fused Jan 29th of '03. I was in a brace for 8 weeks, and a sling for another 4. I could not take the brace off at all for the whole time, and had to even sleep with it on. For me the time after I woke up from surgery was much less painful than the 2 years I went with the shoulder dislocating from nerve damage. It would come out of socket 10-20 times a day. Putting it back in hurt like hell, and it got worse as the day went on. Now, except for the occassional transient dull pain it is almost completley painless. The worst part is that the plate and about 6 of the 16 screws are now visible and painful if bumped against anything. Not having any range of motion doesnt really suprise me after the last 2 years though. It did force me out of the Army which was almost as bad as having my wife and kids know I couldn't do what I used to at work, or for them. I do not regret having the operation at all.

Bigsel...I think you're rushing it. If your surgery was only 2 weeks ago?? After my fusion I was casted for about 3 months. It was back in 1983 so I can't remember exactly the length of time. and things may have changed in 20 years. Talk to your surgeon!!
