Capsulodesis
Capsulodesis
I am trying to find out as much as I can about this surgery. Does anyone know why a child would need a dynamic type versus a static type splint after surgery?

Re: Capsulodesis
Hi Rachel:
This is our understanding of the splints..Dynamic is for allowing movement to be made in the other joints as in areas of contractures. Static is like the SOL and keeps the arm in one position the whole time. I don't know how the dynamic would help with a contracture but that was what we got out of it. Try emailing Dr. Nath or calling Lisa T and let us know what you find out.

Hi Rachel...
we were told that Maia would need a static splint because of her 'body type'. Maia is a bigger child - I wonder if that is why? I'm not sure.

Rachel,
My daughter had the Capsulodesis surgery 3 weeks ago. She is in a dynamic splint. We move her arm up 5 degree's every two weeks. She is really tight in external rotation and we are hoping that by moving the splint postioning she will gain ROM and loosen up somewhat.

Hi, Rachel. I know I'm late replying, but I know you'll see my reply since the board will move it up front. (There really are positives to that feature!) Anyway, I have no idea what the correct answer to your ? is, but here are a couple of thoughts I have. If there is a contracture, then it might have to be treated with a dynamic splint post-op rather than a static splint. For ex., someone (bad with remembering hames) recently posted that her child had a contracture and needed a dynamic splint after the capsulodesis. Another contributing factor might be the age. I think that for older children who have surgery such as the Mod Quad, for ex., might do better with a dynamic splint in some cases b/c the arm has been limited for so long that the nerves might get stretched by suddenly putting it in the traditional SOL splint. In fact, there's a Mom who used to post here whose older son actually got a stretch injury from the dynamic SOL splint. I would bet a dynamic splint would've been the answer for him. Of course, you know I'm just another BP Mom whose trying to figure all this out like most of the others here so I don't know how accurate any of this is. I hope this helps. Take care. -Tina
