- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.
My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!
I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".

Re: Good Tips for One-Handed tasks.....ow do you get rid of bags under you
I never could knit. I don't think I could learn. My fingers don't bend anymore.
Now, I have a question. How do you get rid of bags under your eyes? I hate them and can't seem to get rid of them. any ideas?
Pat

Hi Carolyn & Pat,
After reading your posts I'm wondering how many of us are going to be lying around with T bags on our eyes. I'm just off to give it a try - what about cucumber slices?
LoL

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

Re: Good Tips for One-Handed tasks.....
My Mom made me use warm wet tea bags and sometimes cucumber slices (depending on the price...LOL..). The cucumbers had to be cold.
She also made me use a face mask of Milk of Magnesia to tighten my skin. LOL... I used it when I was young and it works and does not have too many chemicals in it. It is supposed to be good for kids with acne! She was 43/45 when I was born so these are real old remedies.
I tried to knit but my arm was just too tired. I use to crochet quite a bit when I was young. I was shocked when someone told me I did it wrong because I did not work the needle the right way... Duh, I made blankets, vests, baby hats... etc and I was doing it wrong?
There are no wrong or rights for bpi people... It's our own way or NO way!

Does anyone have a clue how to:
change a light bulb in a fixture on a pendant chain, where the chain just twists away if you turn the bulb? it's really a two handed operation.
Even on a stepladder I can't get my BPI arm up to hold the darn thing still.
It's getting dark in my kitchen as the pendant bulbs go out one by one.
Was much better off with those 4-tiny-40W-candle-bulb thingamajigs from 1980, I could get the bulbs out one at a time.
Another thing that gets me is garage door opener units - you have to squeeze both sides at once to open the light bulb compartment. I just squeeze one side and try to rip the darn thing off. Usually works on the 6th try.

Wow that type of light is a tough one!!
One of my biggest problems is killing a mosquito flying in front of my face. Some times I can grab it with one hand, but usually not. I feel like they are challeging me LOL.

Re: Good Tips for One-Handed tasks.....
All this chat makes me feel fortunate to have this bum left that got tore up at birth, come this far and be able to carry things a bit awkwardly, but able to do things nonetheless.
I mask the affliction by hooking a thumb in my belt buckle, it helps me look casual, and it hides the crook in the elbow.
When it comes to heavy or bulky items, I examine the item and judge if I can do it with two hands, or get a cart or dolly. I made the mistake and tried to work a 70# box with a friend, and my left lost its grip. The box dropped and the sudden weight on my right tore the bicep muscle. It healed, but lessons learned.
