Mad as a HORNET
Mad as a HORNET
Okay so I applied for Malik to get SSI in September. I just now got a letter 8 months later that he was denied! WHAT THE??? Any other moms have a hard time getting SSI and what did you do to finally get them to pay, and how did you go about it? I really need all the help and advice I can get.
Thanks
Denae

I applied for Frankie when he was a few months old, got denied filed appeal got denied hired a lawyer won lawyer got most the money then 3 months later was dropped because I made to much money. I was recently divorced worked as a waitress and live with my mom they said her income was considered mine since we were in the same household even though she gave me no money and I paid 1/2 the utilities and she was also a waitress so its not like we had money. Good luck I gave up couldn't take the agravation.
PS I forgot the part about your child must have two disabilities its not enough to have just use of one arm the judge sent us to some quack doctor who said at 12 months old Frankie had ADD that became his second disability at 15 I can tell you he didn't have it then and doesn't have it now I think its all a game they play so everyone gets paid judges, doctors, lawyers everyone except the ones who need it. They took over 285 days to make a decision with Dustin. We contacted our senator, Herb Kohl's office. It's their job to help out with these matters and SSI does not like to hear from them. Dustin was approved within 2 weeks of getting Kohl's office involved. If you do a search there is also a new BPI section for the SSI qualifications that many offices are not aware of. IF you make a copy it may help you also.

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

Here is the new link for SSD.
Many offices are not aware of this change.

I hope this helps.

Re: Mad as a HORNET
Can someone explain what SSD is, who is it for, are there financial restrictions, is it a lifetime determination, at what age do you apply, what does it cover, what are all the pieces of it. Is there a page anywhere that goes into all the details?
Thanks for the info.

Re: Mad as a HORNET
SSD is social security disability. It is for people with disabilities that limit their ability to work. I don't know if there is a specific age, Dustin was 18 when injured. He also has other limitations besides his BPI. He has less coordination in his good hand, trouble walking long distances or standing a lot, Traumatic head injury. So, yes he was eligible. It is not neccessarily lifetime, they will review every so often to be sure you still meet the requirements. In Dustin's case it is living expenses and he gets Medicaid to help cover anything our insurance doesn't cover and to pay when he is no longer covered by our insurance. Yes there are financial restrictions, like for Dustin when he was living at home he recieved about $200 less per month as they feel that is what we were contributing to his living expenses, when he moves out he would be able to get the extra $200 per month. Also when he works there is a max you can make per month, otherwise your SS will be affected. Here is the web site listed on the little book we have from them, hopefully it will answer all the other questions.

Thanks for the website Kath. I will look into that. I have contacted a lawyer about whether his case should be approved or not. I think our Therapist said too many good things about his other areas of development and not enough about his disability to the caseworker. I am unsure whether it will be approved now or not. I really hope we do not get denied again! I really like staying home with him and this is what will allow that to happen. Otherwise I will have to get a job.
