Update on Jill

Post by Angela Butterfly »

Hi,
Some of you might still remember me. I used to spend 3 months every summer posting. I have been away for the last 3 summers. I am the mother of 3.

My Jill (the youngest) was born SEVERE Left OBPI in 1984. Such a struggle to find services.
For the newer posters the history is posted on
http://ubpn.org/messageboard/thread ... 5233#45233
entitled "What it is like living with a disability in
the family"

Jill got married to her High School Sweetheart the Summer of 2006.
Jill graduated from College on Mothers Day Weekend, 1997, Suma Cum Laude, Bachelors of Art Education.
She also got a JOB immediately in her FIRST CHOICE school system. I hear GOOD reports from Jill about her experiences.

Jill's older sisters received private piano lessons. Jill couldn't physically play the piano because of her injury. HOWEVER, I noticed she was an excellent artist, so I begged a High School Classmate of mine (exceptional in art) to give her art lessons. She complied when Jill was in 5th grade and did so for several years.

I was one of those TOUGH LOVE moms that did do the therapy, that did fight the school system for services, etc, and now I can FINALLY sit back and forgive myself for being such a taskmaster about all the therapy and putting on all those splints every night for years and years and years on end. I celebrate that ALL 3 of my children are college graduates.

While Jill was young I cried, got mad, cried some more, Motivated, Moaned & Groaned, Celebrated the littlest of movements.
Even I could have not seen how well she would do. And YES, she does have movement limitations. She does type with one hand.

I Celebrate that ALL 3 of my Children have graduated from College. And now Jill is already talking of getting her masters, while teaching.

Thank you for letting me Brag. I have only a High School education, and always told my daughters that in todays world that is often just not enough.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

Angela
It's nice to see you on the board again.
You should be proud of all you have helped your girls accomplish while working and meeting the needs of an OBPI child.

Give yourself a big pat on the back.

Thanks for giving us an update

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.

My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!

I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".
There is NO SUCH THING AS A DUMB QUESTION.

Hope,
No, I only pop in on occasion. By choice I do not have a computer at home. I finally got a FULL TIME job in 2005, at the same place I had been working, as a full time seasonal, for many years. I work for the Federal Government. At one time there were 3 locations doing the work I do. Now there is only one, and the one I work at was picked to stay open. Good for me.

I do believe I have read that you are going to college, but don't remember what degree you are going for. Hope you are having a GOOD college experience.

Carolyn J, No I am not a grandma yet. Jill wants to be as old as I was (maybe older) before she has her children. She has already gotten married at a much younger age than I did.
My oldest 2 are not married.
My oldest also graduated on Mothers Day Weekend 2007, as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Believe it or not she is Swine Veterinarian.
My Middle Daughter graduated with her Bachelors of Radiological Sciences in 2005, and is the Lead MRI/CAT radiographer at a hospital.
TRIPLE proud Mom.

to Cassidys mom & Michelle. It is my hope by sharing the positives, those of you in the early stages of this injury will be able to see a brighter future, while you are working to improve and learning about this injury.

I didn't know anyone with this injury and did not have this wonderful site to go to back then. All I had was the experiences of my older brother (not quite the same) that has cerebral palsy with developmental delays. He was denied an education when he was smart enough to learn. So that is how I knew to fight for services for my daughter when the doctor's thought she was SO SEVERLY INJURED that she could never get better. My Jill never had surgery of any kind. Just lots & lots of therapy and splints. At times even the O.T.'s thought she couldn't get better......but they learned she could and did.
