taping

Post by parent needing help »

Hi our OT wants to start the kinesio (sp) taping. The PT has no experience in it, they don't even work together. The PT wants to know how will the positioning affect the ROM she does plus what about being in the pool 2x a week be affected.

Any thoughts?

thanks!

We use Kiniesotape often. I think that (if applied correctly and your child has no sensitivity to the tape) there is no harm in using it. I feel that when Ally has it on, she seems to hold her arm in a more neutral alignment. There is no ROM restrictions when wearing it. I would not be concerned about being in the pool. If it comes off, no big deal. I say go for it!

As Ally's mom states the tape is used to try to hold the arm in a more natural position. So, it should not affect the ROM exercises. As I recall with Dustin he could wear it in the pool. I think it was to be replaced every few days. They were trying it on his shoulder but for him it didn't seem to help and with exercise the shoulder went nearly back into position so he quit using it. Hopefully Amy will answer she uses it quite regularly I believe.

The only advise I have is to be very careful with the tape. My daughter was sensitive to it- and since we were instructed to have her wear the tape (which is not really affected by water) for 5 days on, 2 off, we didnt notice for 5 days. When we removed the tape, it pulled her skin off too! Ouch! So just be careful but go for it!

thanks for your input. Did you see good results? I think they are hoping to remind her what position she needs to be in as well as address some discomfort from poor positioning, especially during sleep. I kind of worry about the skin, there are certain parts of her body that will blister with a bandaid that is left on for two days. We go next week for it, we let her try it out on the opposite arm, put on and off, stuff like that this week. she wasn't thrilled with it to say the least. I'll keep you posted.

thanks again

What about asking the PT and OT to talk to each other. Ask each other if it is OK to give each other's contact information out and then expect the PT to contact the OT to get information since she is the one in search of information and the OT is the one with the information? Sounds like a start to me.

Oh they know each other, we live in a fairly small town. No communication though, they both seem to think they are too busy for that! Thanks for the suggestion though
