Mod Quad surgery
Re: Mod Quad surgery
Thanks Kate!
I am very skeptical right now about surgery and certainly don't plan on having any done at this point, but I just was wondering if it had to be done soon or not. I haven't even taken him to a specialist yet. I live in Houston and Dr. Nath and Dr. Shenaq are here, but I that Dr. Nath almost always recommends surgery, but I don't know about Shenaq. Right now we are doing therepy and just waiting to see. I thank God every day that he is doing so well. I know there are lots who have more problems. Thanks.

Shari,
I truly doubt Dr. Nath or anyone would recommend surgery for your child, given his recovery so far. Videos are cheap to make, in any case

Re: Mod Quad surgery
Kate thats what I have read, and so I was wondering why a mod quad would be an appropriate surgery. Does the surgery help with wrist extension and finger flexion, as he lacks these too.

Pook779,
Welcome. My 3 year old also has a C7 injury. she has weak tricep and finger extension problems. No surgery. You might want to get an eval from Dr. Shenaq as he specializes in hand injuries.

I would love to understand and hear more about your decision of no surgery.
If your child has weak tricep and finger extension (fingers involved with this injury usually consist of a more severe injury) why are you sticking with being surgery free? Are you afraid of this? Do you think that nothing will get better from surgery? Do you think there is a chance of your child getting hurt more? This really interests me because I am almost in the same situation, but I am leaning towards the surgery. Thank you.

I talked to Dr. Nath on the phone today, and he referred a hand specialist here in California where I live. He did say that they would not do any kind of tendon transfer (for hand, fingers and wrist)until he was 5 or 6. How is your daughter doing with a weak tricep? My son just turned one, and is finally now pulling up on things. He crawled at 10 months, but things are difficult because of his weak tricep.

Guest,
To answer your questions, I am not opposed to her having surgery but as of now her PT, nuerologist and specialist have all indicated that she doesn't need it at this point. We are continuing our evaluations and will consider surgery in the future if needed. As she gets older she is using fine motor skills more (coloring, painting etc..) And her affected hand is her dominant hand. She gets frustrated especially drawing and coloring sometimes and would much prefer to paint. As far as triceps, she holds her arm bent in when she runs (can't extend it) but is still able to climb etc.. She off balance usually and falls alot.
Pook, I'd like to know who Dr. Nath referred you to as I'm also in California. Could you e-mail me? Thanks.
