wrist fusion

Post by mommieinneed »

Has anyone had to have or get their childs wrist fused....

Im supposed to ask her dr if this would be Maggies next step since the surgery didnt really give her any mobility and she still has to wear a brace to keep her wrist extended.

Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

such a terrible thing to think about for your child, im sorry. have not experienced any situation like that but i will offer advice if you would like to hear it. depends on if it is the only answer. don't think it is a good idea for a child. better to stay optamistic and continue with the brace because modern medicine continues to improve there might be a breakthrough in the upcoming years. i am a recent victim of bpi and i would rather wear a brace then to fuse anything of my own but have not come to that point then. but if i do i would probaly deny that option and hope for another alternative. hope my advice helped, wish you all the best.

Hello. I don't have a child, but I personally just had my wrist fused 2 years after my accident. The choice whether of not to do it for your child has to be your own and hers. I will just speak of my own experience.
I waited two years to see if anything would return and after all the surgeries and therapy, my wrist would only bend a little and as result flopped around. I decided to get my wrist fused so I could get on with my life. What's nice is that a wrist fusion on it's own is a very minor surgery. I have had my cast off for a week now and for me, the result has been life changing already. It's easier to dress with my wrist straight, and I can walk in a straight line, lol (my wrist/hand flopping around would actually pull me off balance). It also just looks better, more normal, and not floppy and curled. I also don't have to sleep in a brace anymore or wear it to excercise.
I say do some reasearch and ask your doctor TONS of questions so that you undersstand if this is an option for your daughter. If you have any questions I would be happy to try and help.

Good luck,
Ang :)
