Scalenectomy / Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
Scalenectomy / Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
I have been diagnosed with TOS after injuring myself 4 years ago while carrying heavy objects. Almost a year ag, 11/07 I had a scalenectomy with Dr. Wolfe @ the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. There was a 70/30 chance of this surgery helping me. I fell into the 30% "failure" percentage.
I have now been living with TOS for almost 4 years. Constant pain in my shoulder, clicking shoulder joint upon external rotation, pain/numbness radiating down my arm from my neck to my fingers. I also have temperature changes, my hand is very cold to the touch most of the time and the veins on my hand stick out a lot (more when I'm in pain).
I have followed up with a neurologist recently. MRI's have shown scar tissue is developing near my brachial plexus and is possibly encapsulating the nerves. Once the doc talks to the radiologist to confirm their findings, and more tests, she may recommend further surgery for scar tissue removal.
I'm stuck in the loop of endless tests which rarely show issues. My doc is soon recommending another EMG (this will be my 5th) but I am unsure I will do it. EMG is the most horrible experience of my life.
Has anyone had this issue with scar tissue pressing on the nerves (if yes, what treatment was done)? Anyone seen improvement in function/sensations from a scalenectomy?
Thanks,
-George
