Hair Growth

Post by momof2gr8kids »

Hello Everyone,
My daughter Arianna who is 8 years old and LOBPI, has long curly hair but I've been noticing that the hair on her left side grows different..it's not as long and not as curly. Is this normal? it's about an inch or 2 shorter than the right side. Anyone else experincing this?
Thanks
Tracy

JAvier has really long and curly hair too. The hair on the right side is shorter. Just as curly though. Probably is related to OBPI, along with all of the other issues that seem to creep up.

Katie has really straight fine hair. I have found that the hair on the BPI side is Fuzzier and more prone to knot and fly away than the right side. She also cannot stand for the left side of her head to be brushed. I have to use a "baby" brush on her.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

I've always had a lot of hair and curly so it's hard for me to say which side is thicker.
I HATED to have my hair brushed as a child.
It was a horror for my mother and I.

I really feel for the kids and their feelings about the hair brush.

My Katie has really fine, straight hair as well. It does have a tendecy to tangle, but I'm going to have to pay more attention to whether it not it is more on her Left (injured) side or not. Interesting point. I'll keep you posted.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: January 1980 Yamaha RD200 vs 16 wheeler truck, result, 1 totally paralysed right arm. I was 21, now 54. I had no surgery, I don't regret this. Decided to totally ignore limitations (easily done aged 21) adapted very quickly to one handed life, got married, had 3 kids, worked- the effect of the injury on my life (once the pain stopped being constant) was minimal and now, aged 54, I very rarely even think of it, unless I bash it or it gets cold, then I wish I'd had it amputated :) Except for a steering knob on my car, I have no adaptations to help with life, mainly because I honestly don't think of myself as disabled and the only thing I can't do is peel potatoes, which is definitely a good thing.

I think you may be right because I have the advantage of knowing what my hair was like before and after the bpi. It definitely changed on the bpi side, when perms were 'in' the curls didn't hold on that side, it grows differently, feels different and looks different. It was fine before the bpi! Nobody would notice but me, though.

Oh the hairbrush!!! enemy number one in our house. Juliana has long curly hair--it is big curls not tight curls. It is definately thinner on the bpi side, though she doesn't have particularly thick hair at all.

Last night she let me braid it (a first) and it kept it in check for the whole day today. Her hair is usually all over the place.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: 28 years old with a right obstetrical brachial plexus injury. 5 surgeries to date with pretty decent results. Last surgery resolved years of pain in my right arm however, I am beginning my journey with overuse in my left arm

I was just thinking about this today as I was noticing how curly the left side was getting and it seems to me that the right side is not as curly. I used to have very straight hair, now it has decided it wants to curl--strange--
No difference in length though.

Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.

My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!

I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".

My 2 cents....I have always been ultra sensitive on my BPI left side including my head/hair...hair is definitely different too on Lt. side. AHHH that ole' Sensory Intergration factor of us OBPI'S!!! Sensory Intergration Topic on both Message Boards are lengthy & VERY helpful information-wise.

I cut Aarons hair with a clipper and when we get to the BPI side he gets really aggravated. I hate hair cut week with him. now I know why. Amy funny you say that your hair wants to curl now at age 18. When I was younger I anlways had short hair and when I got into high school for some reason it got curly and it still is BUT my friends all have to have $100 perms and mine is NATURAL!! LOL. Some days I have to run my fingers thru my hair when its wet so that it won't be so curly.
