Our daughters pt suggested we see a surgeon. She referred us to Dr. Kadiyala (orthopedic surgeon) at University of Iowa Hospitals. We also saw a neurosurgeon, Dr. Menezes, at the same hospital. Unfortunatly Dr. Kadiyala has moved to Florida.
After speaking with the doctors several times, also spoke with another family that had Dr. Kadiyala do their daughters surgery we chose him. We live in Iowa and did not like the follow up procedure at TCH. Our daughter had primary at 6 months (her only surgery). She is now 3 yrs. old and has 95% use of her arm.

We went to TCH for a second opinion and we decided to take our child for primary surgery with Dr Grossman in Miami. I believe you should ask the doctor how many primary surgeries he has done "himself" in the past week, month and year. In addition, ask the doctor how many relevant papers he has published in the past year.
Our child only had primary surgery and it has been 3 years with 96% recovery.
I found Dr Grossman's latest article where he describes the use of botox in brachial plexus injuries published in Seminars in Plastic Surgery 2004 here is the link

Dr Grossman web site is

I hope this can help you
Good luck

I would love to speak to the last two people who had responded to the Doctor poll.(Leslie and Null)

I have a 15 month old who had the primary surgery at TCH and have not been thrilled with the management of the injury after the surgery. She has had excellent results from the surgery and is improving function on a daily basis. I am looking for some nonsurgical options for recovery. Can you please email me personally so I could learn more about your experiences? I would greatly appreciate it.

Kim and Leslie,

I am curious as to what you mean by "the management of the injury after the surgery" and "follow up procedure after the primary surgery" respectively.

My child had primary surgery with TCH last year and we are happy with the results thus far.

Hi, Lori. We consulted with Dr. Waters / Boston Children's Hospital, the TCH team, Dr. Abbott / Dr. Sheldon in NY City, and a team at Yale. Of those four groups, I believe that the only one still intact is Dr. Waters. The Abbott/Sheldon team might still be intact, but I know that they've at least relocated. We ultimately chose TCH. We also really liked Dr. Waters and have periodically seen him for consultations / opinions. My daughter's four surgeries were at TCH. At this point, if she were to need any additional surgeries, they would either be done by Dr. Nath or possibly by Dr. Waters.

In addition to which dr. you feel the most comfortable with, I think that the post-op protocol plays a factor too. For example, some drs. do casting and some do splinting. We have personally preferred the splint, but know of other families who would rather have the cast. Also, some people prefer to choose a team closer to home so that follow-up care is more convenient. We've been very thankful to be able to see Dr. Nath at nearby gatherings or at his satellite office in NJ and even at the UBPN Camp. He, and some other drs., also do videotape consultations. I would definitely recommend getting 2-3 opinions, esp. for primary surgery. I have an extensive list of questions in a MicroSoft Word document that I'd be glad to e-mail to you if you'd like. Just e-mail me at bpmom@comcast.net. Congratulations on your baby. What's his name?

We use Dr. Nath for our son. He has had one surgery to date with him and we couldn't say enough about how great Dr. Nath has treated us. Our son has had amazing results from the mod quad surgery. He is doing things that we never thought he would be able to do. Dr. Nath is not only a great doctor, but he is also a wonderful man. He has treated us so well. He is so kind and sincere. He honestly treats you like a family member. He is very easily accesssible and always patient with our many questions. We have used e-mail and phone calls to contact Dr. Nath and have ALWAYS received extremely quick responses. We didn't have any problem with follow-up after surgery. As I said, Dr. Nath is very easy to get a hold of and is willing to answer any questions at any time. I would highly recommend Dr. Nath. We have also seen a few other BPI specialists in IL and WI, but we chose Dr. Nath. It was a very easy decision for us to choose Dr. Nath. Talk to him one time and you will see how caring and compassionate he is. He truly cares about the children.

My Son has had 4 surgeries to date, Nurolysis w/Dr Lee in San Diego, Mod Quad, Capsulodesis and TT w/ Dr Nath. We are extremely happy with the results. My Son is 5 now and I can't imagine my son going through life without having these surgeries that have given him so much more ROM not to mention the more natural appearance. Thanks Dr Nath…
