It doesnt seem to make me tired I dont think. Ive been taking it so long I really wouldnt know. I was pretty bad off when i started it so hard to say. I have my bad days and my good days. my 1000mg bottle says to take 2-3 times daily. It seems to build up in your system i can tell when not to take it and when my body needs it. It sounds goofy but at first it seemed to give me a happy buzz and occasionally i still get that. When i fist started taking it it give me a light dizzy spell a couple times. Now i dont get that but usaully take two a day one in the morning and one in the eve. Best results without food.

My friend who reccomended it said it will not hurt you in excess but i find this is right for me. I sometimes forget to take it and those days my pain seems worse. Once I was having a very bad pain day so i took an extra dose and i seemed to pull out of it. But ther are somedays i can feel it is built up and i lay off it until my system levels out.

Try it tell me if im crazy. But its either my miracle or my crutch but it works for me. Granted I am not pain free but I have days from 4-8 with an occasional 10 but those are rare. It seems before I get a cold or if stress at work is high my pain is less tolerable.

I just didn't like the sound of the long list of possible side effects.
I know people who have taken it for depression and definately put on weight. However, they do tend to have larger doses than we use for pain relief.

Have a look at the following
http://www.mentalhealth.com/drug/p30-e01.html#Head_3

A health food shop suggested DLPA as a replacement for amitriptyline. I haven't seen any bad side efects mentioned.

Hi Ted...I took ametriptylene in fairly large doses at first (25mg 3 x daily)for around 7 years. Then I slowly cut it down over about 2 yrs, then finally gave up taking it altogether.

The side effects I had were; dry mouth and eyes (eyes felt like they had grit in them all the time)
Very painful mouth ulcers that never seemed to go away; weight gain; constant tiredness; really bad dreams; night sweats; short term memory loss.

The worst ones of all were palpitations and finally, headaches (every morning for months) and weekly migraines that lasted 3 days at a time. At this point, I decided to get off the drug a.s.a.p.

The side effects I experienced were pretty severe, and I do put this down to taking so much of the stuff for so long, so please don't be too alarmed at the long list! It seems reasonable to assume that the severity of the side effects is linked to the length of time and amount taken, but it is wise to be aware of them, as the drug can affect people in different ways.

I feel so much better since I gave up taking it; this was around 3 years ago now. I don't take anything at all for the pain; I found (and still do find) that the pain levels went way down as soon as the drug was out of my system. I'm no doctor, but if it is helping you to sleep, and you have few or no side effects, then I can't see why you shouldn't carry on taking low level doses of it, as long as you feel comfortable about it.

My advice is see your Dr regularly to review your pain relief drugs and levels of dosage. At least this way, you can tell him if you feel any adverse effects as soon as they happen. Hopefully, they never will. :0)
