How about something like...
"You've taken care of your baby for 9 months during pregnancy, do you know how to take care of your baby during delivery?" And then include risk factors, prevention strategies...
"You've worked 9 months to ensure a healthy baby, here's what you can do to ensure a safe delivery (or reduce the chance of a birth injury during the delivery)..." hit on prevention...(risk factors, get off your back...)
"How good is your birth plan? Here are some other considerations"...
Just some thoughts... I think you said this is being posted in a hospital so I think an approach that has the parents thinking about continuing to do all the right things (not just in the prego phase) is good.
I think there have been a lot of great suggestions, how great you have this opportunity. I hope we get to see the final product!

Nancy,
I would love a bunch of copies of Outreach to leave next to the poster in the lobby. What a great idea. I was thinking of printing out the bookmarks that are on the UBPN page and putting them out next to the poster as well.
To everyone else, I will think about all of your suggestions, and boy were they all good ones thus far (keep them coming) and hopefully do your suggestions justice. I hope that this opportunity catches the eyes of many individuals, pregnant or not, who will start a conversation on the topic and save children and families some tears.

What a great opportunity for education and enlightenment. I would want to see the warning signs/risks for shoulder dystocia. I would also want to see the maneuvers that should be used in the event that a shoulder dystocia DID occur so I would know how to respond to it appropriately (and not injur the child). Some pictures might be good so that others can see what the child would look like after they were injured...
I would definitely add this website address to it so others can learn more and find support. Good luck and let us know how it comes out!

Tanya,
i think everyone has given you some great ideas. I will just add that if pictures will be used try to do a chronilogical collage...starting with post-primary surgery (I'll email you Missy's picture with her in the oxygen hood-along with a disclaimer) post-secondary surgery, with casts/splints/etc, on but also some of the kids running and playing (maybe from previous years' Camp??) and maybe some of the teenage, adult and seniors that have these injuries will submit pics to you as well (goes with Kath's birth to grave statement). The pics dont's have to be the main focus. talk to a graphic artist, they might give you some advise for free (try college students or professors)
Good luck and let us know how it goes

another thought - I liked this idea from above "I wish someone had warned me about BPI"... and a picture of an injured baby... or perhaps a baby in post-op. I have great pictures of my baby post-op all wrapped up, with tubes everywhere and legs bandaged... something like that would grab peoples attention and make them want to read further...

I agree with Ginne about pictures. I went to college for graphic design (although I changed my major a couple of years later
) and I was always taught to use something of bright color along with a subject/picture that will make people wonder more about what the prodcut is. Basically, for a BPI poster, I would think that the biggest photo (I know there isnt a lot of room on the poster) should be one of the following: a child in a Spica cast, SOL cast/splint, a child with TES attached, a child hooked up to IVs post op.
You want to pick a photo that will be the main focus of the poster. Maybe you can make it a 5X7 and put some 3X5s near it. Or you can use a 4X6 and then 3X5s around the poster in other places. I would put the larger photo on top in the middle. Layout other pictures by where it may go along with written info. For example, if you write symptoms of BPIs you can show a baby with a limp arm. If you are going to write a list of treatments you can put a pic of TES or cast/splints. Just make sure each picture is clear and the main subject of your picture is large enough to bring attention to someone. This will be a lot of fun for you! Like I said before, this is such a great opportunity. And putting the Outreaches there makes it even better!!! Let us know how it goes.
I know it will be awesome! Good luck!

If someone would like to send me pictures to consider, then email me. I would like them to be through the mail though since I don't have a photo quality printer. I have some pictures of my own daughter, but I may like to use others, too. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

I would love to see a poster with a montage of the pictures of all our OBs with a caption reading, "Every single one of these doctors disabled a baby during delivery. Have you checked out YOUR obstetrician?"
I know that idea is somewhat vindictive and a bit of a pipe dream, but it feels good dreaming it.
(Ilike everybody's ideas.)
