Hand and arm behind back function

Post by AlannahD »

My 2-year-old granddaughter has good function of her LOBPI injury, however, we have noticed the other day when she was putting on her pants with elastic waist, that she did not use her injured side to help with adjusting the waist band. I have seen her put her hands on her hips, though. She has had MOD Quad, and will have triangle tilt later this month. What helps with this function, or is it just something that is difficult for most BPI children?

My 5 year old son cannot put his hand behind his back. He usually does not use his injured hand when pulling up his pants. I try to encourage him to use it, but he doesn't really want to. He can put his hand on his hip, but anything past the side of his body he has a hard time with. He had the mod quad done at 2 years of age. It's my understanding that he will probably always have some difficulties with this. He has pretty good recovery otherwise.

I'll be interested to see if anyone has any good ideas to help with this. Best of luck with your upcoming surgery.

My 5 yr old son also can not get his and behind his back. He tries, but can’t quite get there, I not sure he will ever gain this function, He is able to put his hand behind his head and a lot of other things, this is mostly due to mod quad done 3 yrs ago. Ryan will also be having the Triangle Tilt surgery performed Thursday May 12, we fly out to Texas tomorrow, I hope this procedure will help with the behind the back function, along with the internal rotation and the winging of the scapula. Good luck with your granddaughter upcoming surgery!

my daughter had the modquad at 6 months and has had an excellent recovery (she's 3 now). but she has great diffuculty in pulling up her pants with that arm. this motion is the next step we are working on in therapy. I'm not aware of any type of surgery that would help her out further. I believe, along with the therapists, that we will get her to do the "pulling up" motion with her arm through therapy. her two therapists met with dr. nath when he was in chicago, and i think that for her, therapy is going to be the key.

My daughter is 9 year old and does not use her left her to help pull up her pants. She gets her hand to her hip with the help of her right hand and can keep it there for a bit. She is scheduled for the triangle tilt June 9th.
