Re: Hobbies?
I knit and crochet . I hold my needle in my injured arm at an upright position resting on my leg. If there is a will there is a way. This has always been my motto. I am starting to get arthritis in my good hand so my messages are usually very short.

no external rotation against gravity, can only go to 90 degree fwd flexion, no hand-to-mouth
1 surgery at age 14 (latissimus dorsi transfer). In 2004, at age 28 I was struck with Transverse Myelitis which paralyzed me from the chest down. I recovered movement to my right leg, but need a KAFO to walk on my left leg. I became an RN in 2008. - Location: Montreal, Qc, Canada

Re: Hobbies?
I can't knit, I can't seem to coordinate my LOBPI to do it even though my hand/wrist are fully functional. Weird huh? But I can crochet.

Re: Hobbies?
Funny- I was the other way around. I started out learning to crochet and found I didn't have the dexterity in my left hand to manipulate the 'working' thread. Instead I find it easier to knit- where I just have to hold one needle still in my left hand while the right does almost all the work.
I do find that it aggravates my wrist and before long I get pains shooting though my thumb. = ( I just bought a wrist brace, we'll see how that goes!

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

Re: Hobbies?
I can't hold the needle to knit. I tried for years and finally just gave up. I can crochet and have made many things but I hold the needle in my right (obpi) hand and work the thread with my left hand. i rest my right hand with the needle in it on a pillow and it never moves.

Some how I missed your arrival to the Message Board!
Welcome to the boards, glad you found us.
It's so amazing when we discover that we are not the only one with a "rare" birth injury. It was a little disappointing finding out I was not as unique as I thought I was LOL...
If you have any questions, even if they might sound silly at first, please feel comfortable and fee to ask away. There are no dumb questions here because we all have little quirks that seem to come with the injury.

Re: Hobbies?
I recently started sailing too, just for fun. It's adapted sailing and even if you are a complete quadraplegic you can do it!

Re: Hobbies?
Wow! Sailing and fencing?! Very cool hobbies! I'm sports-impaired, so to speak. I lack the coordination and speed for anything remotely athletic!
Thanks for the warm welcome! I admit to a little disappointment as well, learning I was not entirely unique = ) but finding people to share it with definately outweighs the disappointment!

Re: Hobbies?
As far as sports are concerned, the sailing I did is adapted sailing, so you do as much as you can and they have different attachments and such you can use to help you, along with another person with you.
I did ballet and figure skating (competitive) for years. Only stopped when I was 28!

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: LOBPI. I am 77 yrs old and never had a name for my injuries until 2004 when I found UBPN at age 66.
My injuries are: LOBPI on upper body and Cerebrael Palsy on the lower left extremities. The only intervention I've had is a tendon transplant from my left leg to my left foot to enable flexing t age 24 in 1962. Before that, my foot would freeze without notice on the side when wearing heels AND I always did wear them at work "to fit in" I also stuttered until around age 18-19...just outgrew it...no therapy for it. Also suffered from very very low self esteem; severe Depression and Anxiety attacks started at menopause. I stuffed emotions and over-compensated in every thing I did to "fit in" and be "invisible". My injuries were Never addressed or talked about until age 66. I am a late bloomer!!!!!
I welcome any and all questions about "My Journey".
There is NO SUCH THING AS A DUMB QUESTION.
