medical alert bracelet
medical alert bracelet
Question for anyone that has/wears a medical alert bracelet for their bpi...what is engraved on it?
Im going in for surgery next week and would like to have it for the nurses/staff in the hospital. I am LEFT OBPI.
I was in the hospital 9 months ago for a c-section. The med. staff went for my Left BPI arm a bunch of times, even with the warnings on my chart. VERY scary to be asleep/groggy when nurses come in w/ needles- blood pressure cuff, etc.
Please help me and share- what is necessary on the alert tag. Im running out of time...
Thank you in advance!

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: RTBPI - injured during a right cervical rib resection on 12/3/2008 for thoracic outlet syndrome. The doctor completely transected the lateral cord at C5-C6 Erb's pointe and the suprascapular nerve. Had a nerve repair done on 12/12/2008 to reattach the nerves. Did two years of OT. I have some issues with overuse issues with my left shoulder and also have come to find that my joints are hypermobile so I have instability in the joints which causes a lot of problems such as pressure and pain.

Re: medical alert bracelet
My bracelet was engraved on both sides (max of 5 lines on each side).
So on the top I have that I have Asthma and a Right brachial plexus injury.
On the back side, if they flip it over, I have my name and emergency contact info.

Re: medical alert bracelet
For Michaela I had the same thing as on the medical cards on this website, e.g. Left Brachial Plexus Palsy w/ Horners and Klumpkes Syndromes. No BP or venipuncture on left side engraved on the bracelet. They may ask you to take all jewelry off so ask the doctor or nurse for a skin marker. They use them to measure growth or recession of skin infections like cellulitis and takes a few days to wear off(washes off gradually).I would write on your left arm No BP or IV so they can't miss it.Give them NO EXCUSE to screw it up.LeeAnne

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: Nicholas is 11 years old and his birth was complicated by a severe shoulder dystocia resulting in a severe LOBPI. He has had 5 surgeries to date with very little improvement. His left arm has never fully gained any functional use and has been completely flaccid until his last surgery. It now sits at a more natural position, but he is still unable to use his arm. However, his hand function was never limited until after his most recent surgery and is now completely limited due to an ulnar nerve entrapment. He is getting ready to have his 6th surgery in April to free the ulnar nerve from his last surgery. He is an amazing young man who never gives up on his dreams. He is my HERO!!!

Re: medical alert bracelet
For surgery they will make you take it off. Use the pen that was mentioned and write on your hand/arm NO IV's, BP....

- Injury Description, Date, extent, surgical intervention etc: I am ROBPI, global injury, Horner's Syndrome. No surgery but PT started at 2 weeks old under the direction of New York Hospital. I wore a brace 24/7 for the first 11 months of my life. I've never let my injury be used as an excuse not to do something. I've approach all things, in life, as a challenge. I approach anything new wondering if I can do it. I tried so many things I might never have tried, if I were not obpi. Being OBPI has made me strong, creative, more determined and persistent. I believe that being obpi has given me a very strong sense of humor and compassion for others.

Re: medical alert bracelet
Besides all the bpi information (bp/iv)it is important to note if the child/adult has Horner's Syndrome on the affected side.
I have just recently had a stent put in and when I am in the hospital they tag my arm for no BP/IV/Needle sticks with a red band.
