Hi, I am doing a research report for school regarding brachial plexus injuries and I would like to conduct a poll regarding what type of doc delivered your child if they have a BPI (OB, Family practice, Mid Wife). Also it would be nice to know if they diagnosed Shoulder Distocia and if they used any methods to release the shoulder, and the weight of the infant? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I hope I am not duplicating previous posts. Thanks so much!

I'll go ahead and start since my child has a ROBPI:

Family Practice Doctor
No SD diagnosed
No manuevers used
7 lbs. 6 oz.
Baby was very distressed at time of birth

Midwife in hospital
9lbs. 7oz.
shoulder dystocia diagnosed
NOTHING done at all except applying excessive traction, just panicked, although the records state McRoberts and suprapubic pressure

3rd Year Resident Family Practice Doc that did OB work.
10lbs 3oz
SD Diagnosed
Med. Records say every method was done.

perinatologist high-risk OB
Baby induced
epidural
baby 8lbs. 2oz.
SD diagnosed
McRoberts used along w/ FUNDAL PRESSURE and LATERAL TRACTION on baby's head.
Apgar scores were 8,9 (the same as my previous non SD birth)

diagnosed with "true shoulder dystocia"
fundal pressure

traction x 5 pulls

OB (with at least 25 years experience...well, THAT did a lot of good!)
Excessive traction and fundal pressure.
No shoulder dystocia mentioned to us, some mention in notes of shoulder something, but mostly illegible notes.
I was told, when the nurses noted the "nipple is black, the shoulder has bruising, and the left arm is not moving" that it was "positional paralysis." That she had a "dead arm" due to her position in utero.
She weighed 9lbs 6oz.
She is LOBPI.

forgot to add:
that the "positional paralysis" was temporary and would be better in "no time."
She also had a broken clavicle.

resident OB (NOT my doctor)
shoulder dystocia diagnosed (although we were not told what was going on)
nurse jumped on top of me & applied fundal pressure - records say supra-pubic pressure though!

*fundal pressure (not recorded in drs. notes BUT she is recorded on our video camera calling for it twice) and a weak attempt at mcroberts.

(I will also add for what its worth regarding your report that our baby was 2 weeks overdue and our previous two children each weighed 8 lbs 13 oz and each suffered broken clavicles.)
