I am recovering from nerve damage (axillary) which controls the deltoid muscles. I realize my situation is not as severe as many of you, but there seems to be a lot of similarities. The nerve was initially damaged during a shoulder surgery I underwent in Dec. of 02. I underwent a second surgery in June of 03 to try to fix the nerve that was damaged during the first surgery. The good new was that the nerve was intact and I did not need a graft. I am now in the process of slowly recovering. I seem to be getting good response from the rear deltoid, some small response from the mid deltoid and very little to no response from the front deltoid. But I am much better then I was before surgery as I can use the arm pretty good except for over my head. Has anyone else had to recover from a similar injury? I am wondering the time frames for recovery, how well you recovered, and what to expect. Any info would be helpful. Thanks. Chris

can this nerve damage be corrected. or will it heal it self. what's the best thing to do?

If the nerve is not severed or torn, it may heal by itself. It can take a very long time :0(

Please Tell me how you are Now. Or if anyone has any helpful info. I'm 25 yrs old and recently suffered a broken colarbone, torn shoulder ligaments and severe (axillary)nerve damage from a hit (tackle i hit someone with) on my second day after walking onto Miami Univ. rugby team. I have no response from my rear or mid delts. I'm very depressed. Nate

I had shoulder surgery about two months ago to correct Multi-Directional Instability and I can not yet lift my arm at all. My range is okay I just have no strength. My deltoids have completely atrophied. My scapula is winging out a bit and my arm is hanging so low that people ask questions.I am getting a EMG on Thursday to learn the extent of the damage. I have read that if there are no signs of improvement 3 - 6 months after surgery another surgery is recommended. Mine seems to only be getting worse. Does it sound like I am totally screwed?

Hello everyone. I was in a motorcycle accident about 7 months ago. Initially, I couldn't move my arm in two directions (no deltoid or superscapular muscle working). After two months, the rotator cuff muscles came back and I could raise my arm again. At about 6 months the upper deltoid started to come back. However, the lower deltoid hasn't come back yet. So, I can't reach my arm backwards or to the side when I spin my wrist to face outwards. The doctor said that I have one week to decide if I want to have surgery. I am leaning towards "no" at this point because he stated that the chance of recovery is 60% and it could be worse than now. Any comments would be appreciated. I am a 28 year old male and I hope to play softball again. thank you.

I took a fall from a moving horse on 1/08/06. I had to have surgery to repair the humerus. I had a pin placed in the fracture and a bone graph. Since the surgery, the pain just gets worse and worse. I went for an EMG last month, and I was told I have axillary nerve damage and the deltoid is not functioning. My shoulder socket has dropped to the middle of my arm. I keep being told to wait and see if it gets better, but living with this and not being able to move my arm at all is very depressing. I do not know what type of doctor to seek or if anything can be done. One doctor said if left too long RSD can set in. I've seen this disease up close and it isn't pretty. Any advise would be helpful.
