I am 31 weeks into my 2nd pregancy. My 1st son was 12lbs at birth (38wks). I just found out on Monday that despite all of my efforts ( little weight gain, watching glucose levels) my 2nd son is 5.3 lbs already!!!! My new OBGYN assures me that I have done nothing wrong and I know this one will be delivered c-section. But I still can't help feeling like I've done something that causes huge babies. Has anybody else experienced this problem?

Yes, all my children were big, not over ten pounds big but big. My smallest was 8 pounds. With my third daughter I had gestational diabetes, I never ate anything I was not supposed to, I mean that seriously, because my daughter born before her was 9 pounds five ounces 3 weeks early and suffered a shoulder dystocia and a broken clavicle. I only gained 11 pounds with my third daughter and she was 9 pounds 11 ounces a month premature. Even her lungs were not properly developed. So, some people are just prone to larger babies. Smile !!! It is not your fault

I am OBPI and was 11 lbs. 14 ozs. when I was born. Most of my life I've been thin and small... Still short but not thin anymore.

My first pregnancy the doctors were concerned because I gained no weight until after my 5th month. I gained a total of 13 lbs and had an 8 lb 3oz baby. They were surprised and I lost 26 lbs right after delivery so it seems I lost weight when pregnant. I got pregnant right away with my second child and once again was not gaining weight but this pregnancy i did not throw up for almost the entire pregnancy... still I did not gain more than 5 lbs during the first 5 months. I gained a total of 14 lbs... looked and felt good. The doctors were sure it was a smaller baby but what a shock 8 lbs. 14 ozs and 23 " long. They kept bring the baby in and laying her across my stomach because I seemed to carry her so small they could not believe I was due when I checked in... My third baby they gave me b=12 shots 9 days before he was born and I was in premature labor in my 7th month but it stopped. They said he would be 7 lbs if born then but he was 3 days late and I gained all of 17 lbs... He was 9 lbs... All three pregnancies i was a smoker and in those days they did not have women stop smoking etc... In fact the last baby the felt with my history I should not give up smoking because they wanted to keep the babies weight down... I'm tell you this long windy story to assure you that you did nothing wrong. I ate anything I could or wanted when I was pregnant and just did not gain weight. My mother had all very large babies and was a tall woman but she gained weight and later in life was a diabetic all of her sisters had very large babies and now I find out the most of my cousins and their daughters have had large babies. My daughters last baby was 9 lbs 9 ozs. she gained much more weight than I ever did but was not diabetic she is thin but has had all three babies 9 lbs and over....

I had girlfriends who were pregnant with me and in trouble for all their weight gains... they had 5 lb and 6 lb babies.
When we were having babies some 30/40 years ago, women were not supposed to gain more than 20 lbs. I think a lot has to do with genetics besides weight gains. I'm not a doctor but have had three children and my BFFs gained tons of weight and had small children. Hope this helps to reassure you tat you are doing your best but not in full control of your baby's weight.
