Just curious about the pros and cons of Montessori School?

I think rather that it's pros and cons for specific children not about the method itself... certain children will do well in that environment and certain children won't.

Maia needed a "group structure" - she can't handle independent situations as well so we didn't send her, but my eldest daughter did well with it, she was more secure within herself and liked the self discovery aspect.

Hi Kim,
My sister's 11 year old is in a Montessori school in Cincinnati,Ohio(a bit pricey,no financial aid available). Her daughter was diagnosed with absence seizures at 6 years of age. She was struggling in public school to keep up & they were not assisting with her needs. My sister loves the program, they are very in tune with her daughters needs. She was tested in physical abilities, fine motor skills, cognitive testing, reading comp. the while gamut while in Montessori. This testing was done to determine where she needed extra help. They provide extra time for her to complete assignments, & a tutor works with her one on one four days a week in class. The set up is very hands on oriented when it comes to learning. They use all the senses when learning. i.e.. Manipulating objects to learn fractions. Upon speaking to my sister, it is a very structured environment, a routine is followed daily. However the children basically have an IEP and work a their own pace based on their individual needs. If you want to chat with my sis, just shoot me an e-mail: pixiedust@rcn.com I'll give you her e-mail.

Thanks Francine and Allison for your responses. I'm so tired of the schools "teaching to the test" (we have state assessment testing in Ohio).

In addition, my daughter is on an IEP. In her intermediate school that means grouping her in with very challenged kids for test taking. (She really only needs a scribe for written portions.) She is humiliated to be grouped with these very challenged kids (mostly behavioral issues) and is begging me to take her off the IEP.

I just want an environment that will respect my daughters strengths, while addressing the challenges.

Anyway, thanks again!

Kim
