Erb's Palsy or brachial plexus palsy in a newborn is usually the result of poor technique employeed during the delivery of a baby that encounters Shoulder Dystocia. Shoulder dystocia is when the shoulder becomes entrapped on the mothers pelvis or pubic bone (or both). The injury occurs when the doctor pulls (improperly) on the baby to try and dislodge the shoulders.

Erb's Palsy is what it is called when it affects certain nerves, C5-C6

Klumpkes Palsy involves nerves C7-T1

Complete Brachial Plexus Palsy is when it involves all five nerves C5-6-7-8 and T1

BUT they are ALL Brachial Plexus Injuries.
