Hi,

I was wondering if anybody's child had been diagnosed with scoliosis. I had a few questions about it.

Did you rely on your regular pediatrician for a diagnosis, or did you go to an orthopedist? What were some of the indications that there was a problem? Did your child have other secondary BPI issues that went along with the scoliosis? And at what age did your child get diagnosed with scoliosis?

My Pt checked me for it last year. No one ever mentioned the fact that I have mild scoliosis before.

But then again they never mentioned my arm unless I did and then brushed it off as if it was no big deal. I did not realize they did not know much about it.

You should see a Orthopidic Surgeon for those concerns. I do recall our Orthopedic Surgeon telling me that Scoliosis is a common probabliity in Children with OBPI and that it is something they will be watching for. I myself have Scoliosis and I can tell you that I have a buldging rib on one side of body as well as that my side or shall i say Left side of my body is larger and stronger than the other. And I do have some minor pain from time to time. Now my scoliosis is mild and affects the Thoracic region of my back and Scoliosis is not limited to only that region.

It is my understanding that exray determines Scoliosis and it should be done every few years.

We have not been told that Rain has scoliosis, but I have her checked from time to time because I have had scoliosis since I was about 11 years old. I wore the Milwaukee brace as a child and am watching Rain very closely because she has 2 strikes against her already so to speak. I don't know much about scoliosis in children with bpi's but I can tell you what I know regarding myself. Hope this helps.

Lenni - You're right about seeing an orthopedic surgeon. I'm not sure if we've seen surgeons or not. I've taken Danny to two orthopedists because of his intoeing/hip issues and no one mentioned scoliosis. But knowing the risks at work, I want to keep on top of the issue.

Back in middle school they meantioned I had it, but no one ever pursued it anymore after that. Maybe I should sometime. Once again, I guess I'm not alone.

I wonder if scoliosis could occur eventually with a traumatic injury? If so, how soon or often should it be checked??

I am not sure but I think it may be possible over time because even the tbpi report the bad posture they have due to compensation and looking for a comfortable position for their shoulders and arms. I am sure someone will know the true medical cause for it and it probably has to to with muscle atrophy and inbalance.
